Tour for Landowners
MILFORD — July 2 is the deadline to sign up for the "Forest & Wildlife Field Tour for Landowners" scheduled for Saturday, July 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Seating is limited and pre-registration is required. Participants will learn about managing forests to benefit wildlife as well as produce timber. The most current and objective information available will help you maximize results of your investments. Foresters Tim Carr and Robin Wildermuth will give presentations on topics such as forest ecology, forest management, grouse habitat enhancement, and Quality Deer Management implementation. Carr is a PA Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR) service forester for Pike County with a BS from Penn State University in Wildlife Management & Forestry. Wildermuth is a forest consultant and land manager for the Blooming Grove Hunting & Fishing Club in Pike County. He has a BA in Biology/Environmental Studies from Dartmouth College and a master's in Forest Management from Duke University. Both are members of the Pike County Branch of Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA). Site visits during the program include seeing the results of commercial timber harvests, shelterwood cuts, overstory removals, herbiciding hay-scented fern, and deer fencing. Carr and Wildermuth will discuss the Forward Looking InfraRed (FLIR) flights that is a census technique involving an airplane and infrared video cameras at night, and deer check stations that they use to assess deer numbers and health. The workshop is intended to provide a first-hand look at some of the most current forest management techniques used to address the many challenges landowners face today. A boxed lunch will be provided for this rain or shine event. Bus transportation will be provided from the parking lot of the Wallenpaupack High School to area sites including Promised Land State Park and the Blooming Grove Hunting & Fishing Club. Registration fee per person is $10 and a check should be made payable to "Extension Special Account." Mail your name, address, phone number, fax number and email address along with payment to: Pike County Cooperative Extension, Forest & Wildlife Management Tour, 506 Broad St., Milford, PA 18337.
