Pike County Quality Deer Management Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Quality Deer Management (QDM) is a philosophy or practice for landowners and hunters to work together toward producing healthy deer herds by not harvesting young bucks but harvesting enough does to better balance the herd and maintain quality sustainable habitat. Public awareness and continued hunter education is vital for sound decisions in deer management practices. The National QDMA office is located in Bogart, Georgia. National website: www.qdma.com. Branch website: www.QDMAPikeCountyPa.com. QDMA Short Course Scheduled for Saturday, April 22, - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Pike County Branch of QDMA will hold a Short Course educational program on April 22 at the Dingman Township firehouse, 680 Log Tavern Road, same location as last year. New Directors Welcome to three new directors: Gregory Hoeper, Bill Edwards and Steve Camasta. They replaced directors Tim Carr, Russ Current, and Joani Bucksbee, who stepped down due to other obligations and demands on their time but still plan to remain active in the Branch. John Crerand accepted the position of treasurer left vacant by Joani. We commend Joani for her expertise and excellent organizational skills in getting the Branch bookkeeping system organized. Eastern Sports ShowTeresa Crerand, representing the Branch and PA QDMA, helped score antlers for two days at the PA QDMA booth at the 9-day Eastern Sports Show held in Harrisburg at the Farm Show Complex in February. Since training last summer to score whitetail deer & elk antlers and bear skulls, she gains experience at state events as part of training requirements for unofficial scorers toward becoming official scorers. She also spoke with hunters and non-hunters about whitetail deer issues, managing healthy deer on quality habitat, the importance of food plots as supplemental mast, forest health throughout the state and in Pike County where forests are severely overbrowsed.
The Eastern Sports show is the largest in North America and attracts hundreds of people each year. It is packed with product displays, educational material, entertainment & special performances, hands-on activities, and contests. Speakers are biologists, outdoor writers, authors, and various sport specialists. Demonstrations include casting & fishing techniques, archery trick shooting, turkey calling, lumberjack presentation, water safety, and numerous awesome taxidermist mounts. Booths feature the latest in sporting arms, archery products, game calls, outfitters & guided hunts, fishing gear & charters, boating, camping equipment, motorcycles & all-terrain vehicles, and alpaca wool display. Children compete in a trout fishing contest, casting contest, interactive video games, and learned how to use archery equipment. All ages stopped to observe live bears, tigers, and a wolf. Taxidermist contest entries included a full-body white-tailed 10-point buck landing from a jump, squirrel peeking from its tree home, and bears of all sizes including one standing on its hind feet reaching upward over a 6-foot dead tree stump. QDMA & HSH Displays at the Milford Bible Church Sportsmen’s Dinner, April 1 Branch directors set up QDMA and Hunters Sharing the Harvest (HSH) displays at the Milford Bible Church third annual sportsmen’s event on Saturday, April 1. It was a great opportunity to interact with the public and hand out educational material to the 600 people that attended throughout the day. Director Allan (Tad) McAlpin showed 1950s photos of healthy forests and compared them with the forests we observe today that are lacking understory. Director Nicole Bernarsky gave presentations on how to age whitetail deer jawbones using a variety of jawbones from fawn to adult deer. Director Teresa Crerand helped hand out educational material and promote upcoming events. John Crerand spoke with the public about the process of donating a deer to the program that provides ground meat to food banks. The day began outdoors with a 3-D archery range course and fly fishing demonstration. Inside, there were exhibitors that gave 15-minute presentations throughout the afternoon. Attendees had the opportunity to learn more about catching trout, trapping, arrow refletching, gun sights, shooting skills and techniques, muzzleloading, shell reloading, taxidermy, food plots, antler scoring, guided trips, Native American artifacts, and bird hunting with hunting dogs. Their game dinner was much anticipated by all. Speaker Gerry Caillouet of West Milton, Ohio, is director and host of God’s Great Outdoors Radio, a syndicated radio show broadcast on about 200 shows nationwide, past board member of Christian Bowhunters of America, Ohio Hunting Safety Instructor, and instructor for National Bowhunter Education Foundation.
