Milford Experimental Forest Overview
Research towards Restoring and Protecting Healthy, Productive Forests and Watersheds in the Delaware Highlands The Milford Experimental Forest is a 1,400-acre research forest established in 1901 by James and Gifford Pinchot and the Yale School of Forestry to study how to regenerate a new forest after the original forests were cleared in the late 1800's. In 1998, the Pinchot family reestablished the experimental forest to study solutions to major threats now facing the forests and watersheds of the Delaware Highlands region. Current research addresses issues including: · How to bring overabundant deer populations back into balance with their natural forest habitat and restoring the forest ecosystem that has been severely damaged by several decades of excessive browsing. · How to avoid suburban sprawl as rapid growth continues in this region by protecting important habitat and open space and by building compact and livable communities. · How to restore critical species that are being eradicated by invasive insects and diseases, with a special focus on bringing back the American Chestnut and preventing the loss of the Eastern Hemlock. The Milford Experimental Forest is a partnership between the USDA Forest Service at Grey Towers, the Pinchot Institute for Conservation, and the Pinchot family. Visit the Milford Experimental Forest at the deer check station this year on Route 6 during rifle season. Or call us for a visit of our research forest projects and to discuss ecological management of our forest resources.
